Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Track
As a member of the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC,) we offer a Pre-Licensure BSN Degree embracing the state-wide common nursing education curriculum.

Introduction

The Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Track at Western New Mexico University is a participating member in the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC) (https://www.nmnec.org).

The Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing Track is accredited with full approval by the New Mexico Board of Nursing (https://nmbon.sks.com), 6301 Indian School NE, Suite 710, Albuquerque, NM 87110, telephone (505) 841-8340.

The baccalaureate tracks in nursing at Western New Mexico University are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org), 655 K Street NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791.

The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (AACN, 2008) are integrated throughout the BSN program.

Mission and Vision Statement

Mission

The mission of the Western New Mexico University School of Nursing is to promote health and improve the quality of life for diverse populations by providing nursing education which instills the values of community, nursing scholarship, practice and community service.

Vision 

The School of Nursing (SON) prepares Registered Nurses (RNs) as clinicians, educators, and nursing leaders to serve in the local and global community.

Admission Criteria

General Information

  • This is a limited enrollment program. All students interested in applying for admission must first be admitted to WNMU and complete the School of Nursing Application.
  • Students who have been convicted of a felony involving immoral behavior or substance abuse may not be eligible for licensure in New Mexico. Any individual who has a felony conviction should contact the New Mexico Board of Nursing prior to enrolling in the WNMU Nursing Program.  Pre-Licensure nursing students complete a background check following the standards of the Caregivers Criminal History Screening Act administered by the New Mexico Department of Health. If during the program, a student is unable to complete a clinical rotation because he/she is excluded from a facility for criminal record, he/she will not be able to complete the program.
  • Read all instructions carefully as procedures may change between application cycles.

Deadlines

  • For Fall selection – Applications shall be accepted from February 15th through May 15th for each application cycle. Students must apply each application cycle in order to be considered for admission, and may apply during the spring term when they are completing their final supporting coursework. (All supporting courses must be completed by the end of spring semester.)
  • Deadline for receipt of official transcripts from other universities to the Admissions Office is April 1st of each year.

Notice of Admission

  • Students will be notified by email of their admission status no later than June 15.

Admission Requirements & Criteria For Selection

Selection GPA (40%)*                       2.75 minimum

  1. Minimum GPA of 2.75 (40% of selection) as calculated from eight supporting courses.  Please note, the minimum GPA of 2.75 does not guarantee admission to the program.  
    • Completion of all supporting courses with a “C” or better. If a supporting course is a “D” or “F” the student is not eligible for selection.
    • All supporting courses must be completed by the end of spring semester. If students do not have all the supporting courses completed they are not eligible for selection.
    • Science supporting courses can only be taken a maximum of 2 times.  If students take a supporting course 3 times or more, they will be ineligible for selection.

  1. Proctored ATI TEAS Entrance Exam (50% of selection). Minimum score of 64% passing.   Minimum score of 50 on the Reading subtest.   The score will be used for screening and ranking of applicants.  Students may only take the Entrance Exam twice (2) per application cycle; the highest score will be used.  Students wishing to take the exam more than once are responsible for paying the fee each time.  Students must pass the Entrance Exam with the established minimum score of 64% or higher and with a minimum score of 50% on the Reading subtest in order to be considered for selection.  The ATI TEAS Entrance Exam must be taken each application cycle.  Students may take the ATI TEAS Entrance Exam in March and May.  Instructions on exact dates and how to register and pay for the ATI TEAS Entrance Exam will be emailed to students in mid-February.

NON-NMNEC Transfer Guidelines

Students wishing to transfer from a non-NMNEC program must meet all of the admissions criteria for WNMU’s School of Nursing Pre-licensure BSN track.  The school of Nursing will not substitute “content-based” courses for “concept-based” (NMNEC) courses.  Former nursing students transferring in from a non-NMNEC curriculum must take all of the nursing courses with the possible exception of Pharmacology.  If the student has taken Pharmacology at a non-NMNEC school, the student may submit a course description and syllabus for the course to have it considered for substitution.

NSNA (National Student Nurses' Association)

The WNMU – SNA is a local chapter of the NSNA (National Student Nurses’ Association)

Organized in 1992, at the Silver City campus of WNMU, the SNA (Student Nurses’ Association) is committed to the facilitation of the professional development of future nurses emphasizing service, commitment, and education.

The WNMU-SNA adheres to the NSNA mission statement:

“Bring together and mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, as well as those enrolled in baccalaureate completion programs; convey the standards and ethics of the nursing profession; promote development of the skills that students will need as responsible and accountable members of the nursing profession; advocate for high quality, evidence-based, affordable and accessible health care; advocate for and contribute to advances in nursing education; and develop student nurses who are prepared to lead the profession in the future.”

WNMU student nurses are involved in multiple community projects, health fairs, educational activities, and fundraising.

Through the NSNA the students also have access to educational resources, scholarships, leadership opportunities, and career guidance.
